Shoe Year’s Day Virtual 5K

A portion of this event’s proceeds benefit our featured charity, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

The New Year brings with it new resolutions, including for many the resolution to become more active, exercise frequently, and improve one’s physical fitness. Epic Races and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources would like to help you kick start that resolution with our inaugural Shoe Year’s Day Virtual 5K, the perfect way to begin 2016: on the path to wellness!

Get Up and Get Out

Every year, the Department of Natural Resources holds a variety of events throughout Michigan to kick off Shoe Year’s Day. Since research studies have shown that outdoor fitness activities have tremendous health benefits, we have teamed up with the Michigan DNR and fellow partners the Michigan Dept. of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Michigan Dept. of Community Health, mParks, and Blue Cross Blue Shield to bring you the Shoe Year’s Day Virtual 5K. Anyone of any age and any ability can participate: all you need is your own two feet and an outdoor location! It’s our hope that the Shoe Year’s Day Virtual 5K will encourage you to continue down the path of wellness by walking (or running) at least 10,000 steps every day.

Commit to Stay Fit!

Ready to start the new year off on the right (or left!) foot? Then follow these steps:

  • Register for this event at RunSignUp; deadline to register is now February 29!
  • Head to your chosen venue for your Shoe Year’s Day Virtual 5K. This can be any park or public land managed by the State of Michigan Department of Natural Resources,  your favorite local park or trail, or right in your own neighborhood!
  • Run your Shoe Year’s Day Virtual 5K! Or walk it, dance it, skip it, gallop it, hop it, snowshoe it, cross-country ski it, hike it… you’re welcome to do your Shoe Year’s Day Virtual 5K any way imaginable as long as it’s on your own two feet. Be sure to complete your 5K between January 1 and February 29!
  • Tell us about your Virtual 5K! Head to the Shoe Year’s Day Virtual 5K Facebook page, “join” the event if you haven’t already, then upload your 5K using MapMyRun or Strava, upload a photo of your GPS tracker showing your mileage and time, share a selfie of you where you ran or walked, or post a comment about your 5K. You can also post your photos on Instagram and tag us (@epicraces) or tweet about it on Twitter and tag us (@epicraces). Be sure to use the hashtags #MIShoeYear and #HeartMISnow!
  • Letting us know about your Shoe Year’s Day Virtual 5K via social media is preferred, but not mandatory!
  • All swag will be sent out via Priority Mail on March 7, 2016!

Hi! I registered and ran the virtual ‘Shoe Year’s Day’ race, but I can’t find a place to input my time. Could you send me a link so that I can send in my results?
