The New Year brings with it new resolutions, including for many the resolution to become more active, exercise frequently, and improve one’s physical fitness. Epic Races and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources would like to help you kick start that resolution with our inaugural Shoe Year’s Day Virtual 5K, the perfect way to begin 2016: on the path to wellness!
Every year, the Department of Natural Resources holds a variety of events throughout Michigan to kick off Shoe Year’s Day. Since research studies have shown that outdoor fitness activities have tremendous health benefits, we have teamed up with the Michigan DNR and fellow partners the Michigan Dept. of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Michigan Dept. of Community Health, mParks, and Blue Cross Blue Shield to bring you the Shoe Year’s Day Virtual 5K. Anyone of any age and any ability can participate: all you need is your own two feet and an outdoor location! It’s our hope that the Shoe Year’s Day Virtual 5K will encourage you to continue down the path of wellness by walking (or running) at least 10,000 steps every day.
Ready to start the new year off on the right (or left!) foot? Then follow these steps:
Every Shoe Year’s Day participant will receive a beautiful finisher’s medal created especially for this event, along with a Shoe Year’s Day T-shirt. All medals and shirts will be mailed out via Priority Mail on March 7. Wear your Shoe Year’s Day shirt all year round to show your support of Michigan’s state parks and your commitment to fitness!
Please note: Epic Races does not ship swag to Canada or internationally. If you are a resident of Canada or another country and wish to participate in an Epic Races virtual event, please provide us with a U.S. shipping address.
Completing the Shoe Year’s Day Virtual 5K has definite health benefits, whether you’re taking your first step in a year of racing events or your first step towards fitness ever. Remember that #MIShoeYear is more than just a one-time event. It’s one of the most powerful fitness resolutions you can make, especially if you share your walk or run with friends and family. Your participation in the Shoe Year’s Day Virtual 5K also has benefits beyond these: a portion of the proceeds from this event go to the Michigan DNR to help fund reforestration efforts and fitness programs in state parks. The Shoe Year’s Day Virtual 5K is part of the Pure Michigan FITness Series of events and is endorsed by the Michigan Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health, and Sports.
A State of Michigan Park permit is required to enter all DNR-managed properties. The Recreation Passport is your $11 ticket to Michigan’s state parks and outdoor adventures for an entire year! Michigan residents are not able to purchase a one-day park pass. For State Park entry, all Michigan residents must have a Recreation Passport. For details about the Recreation Passport, click here.
