Epic Races Presents Shoe Year’s Day

from the December 23, 2015 Sun News Times

The New Year brings with it new resolutions, including for many the resolution to become more active, exercise, and improve physical fitness. Epic Races and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources are helping people throughout Michigan kick start that resolution with their inaugural Shoe Year’s Day Virtual 5K.

The Shoe Year’s Day Virtual 5K is an all-inclusive 5K (3.1-mile) running or walking event. Anyone can participate — families, running clubs, walking buddies — any one of any age and any athletic ability.

There is no competitive aspect and the goal of the Shoe Year’s Day Virtual 5K is to get people outside to exercise on your own two feet. Participants can complete the virtual 5K by running, jogging, walking, snowshoeing… any form of locomotion, as long as it’s on two feet. As the Shoe Year’s Day Virtual 5K is a virtual event, each participant chooses where to complete their 5K — at one of Michigan’s state parks, on a local trail, or in their own neighborhood.

“Research studies show that outdoor exercise has tremendous health benefits,” notes Epic Races founder/CEO Eva Solomon. “With improved fitness being one of the most common New Year’s goals, Epic Races is thrilled to offer people a way to start 2016 off on the right shoe.”

A portion of the proceeds from this event will fund improvements at Michigan State Parks.

The Shoe Year’s Day Virtual 5K is part of the #MIShoeYear roster of events offered throughout the state by the Michigan DNR. Registration for the Shoe Year’s Day Virtual 5K is currently open. Participants must complete the Shoe Year’s Day Virtual 5K between January 1 and January 7, 2016 [now extended through January 31]. All Shoe Year’s Day participants receive a Shoe Year’s Day event shirt and a finisher’s medal; event swag will be shipped out to participants in early February [now March 7].

Epic Races is a multisport race management company. Several of its events, including the Ann Arbor Triathlon, the Battle of Waterloo, and the American Home Fitness Detroit Goddess Half Marathon, 10K, & 5K, take place on DNR properties.
