The Virtual Probility Ann Arbor Marathon Challenge is a precursor to The Probility Ann Arbor Marathon held annually each March. These events support local charities committed to ending the stigma surrounding mental health. Together, we are going to E-RACE THE STIGMA!
Here’s how to get on board:
– Log your miles
– Join us on our Zoom channel March 21 and April 16 for the festivities!
– EARLY REGISTRATION PACKET PICK UP: Epic Races HQ 600 S. Wagner Ann Arbor, MI 48103 this SATURDAY, MARCH 20 3-5PM
The event will begin on March 21 with the virtual full distance events and will culminate on April 16.
March 21 with kick-off the challenge with a virtual marathon, half-marathon, 10K, and 5K. Participants can run on a course of their choice or on the traditional course which will have minimal markings, but will be set up on RaceJoy for audio cues and fun inspiration along the way.
March 21 will also be the start of the 26.2 Mile-A-Day Challenge. Everybody will run, walk, skip, trot, or saunter one mile each day and on the 27th day, we all join together to complete our “marathon” by running .2 together.
All participants are invited to participate in both the full virtual challenge on March 21 as well as the Mile-A-Day.
Not sure how far a mile actually is? It’s 1760 yards and it is also 5280 feet. That’s it! It is also just 4 laps around a track or the distance of The University of Michigan Stadium to Burton Tower.
Why are we so obsessed with the mile?
The mile is a distance we can all relate to. We’ve run it in gym class, we’ve traveled for miles, we’ve had miles to go, we’ve been told it’s less than a mile away, and the list could go on. The mile is a magical distance and most anybody can run, jog, walk, or trot a mile a day!
Here’s what you get!
In partnership with the Rotary Club, we are committing all our fundraising efforts for this event as well as the 2021 Probility Ann Arbor Marathon to organizations that help and support mental health and/or issues associated with mental health and play an active role in reducing the stigma around mental illness.
Epic Races will be donating 10% of each entry fee to one of our featured charities. You will have the opportunity to choose where you would like yours to go during the registration. Want to raise money for a specific organization that supports mental health and reducing the stigma? Have them apply below to be a featured charity.
If your organization fits our criteria, we welcome your application HERE.
Now you understand our obsession with the mile, what about this marathon thing?
A marathon is 26.2 miles. Why such an odd distance?
Basically, the idea for the modern marathon was inspired by the legend of an ancient Greek messenger who raced from the site of Marathon to Athens, a distance of about 40 kilometers, or nearly 25 miles, with the news of an important Greek victory over an invading army of Persians in 490 B.C. After making his announcement, the exhausted messenger collapsed and died. To commemorate his dramatic run, the distance of the 1896 Olympic marathon was set at 40 kilometers. In the 1908 London Olympics, the course was laid out from Windsor Castle to White City stadium, but The Queen really wanted to watch the finish from the royal family’s viewing box so the extra distance was added making it 26.2 miles.
Fun fact: Only 0.5% of Americans can say they’ve completed a marathon!
Can my daily steps on my Fitbit count if they total one mile?
No, they can not.
If I run 3 miles today, can I take the next 2 days off?
No, you may not.
How do I log my miles?
