Wildland Firefighters Foundation Virtual Race

Event Details

Challenge yourself to the "Pack Test" or run (or walk) a 5K in support of Wildland Firefighters through October 29.

The firefighter pack test is a physical fitness test for wildland firefighters.

The pack test is intentionally stressful as it tests the capacity of muscular strength and aerobic endurance of the firefighter. There are three levels of tests known as arduous, moderate, and light (we call it traditional). All federal and most state and private agencies use the pack test.

In support of the Wildland Firefighters, we’ve got our version here, for you to put yourself to the test, make yourself proud, earn some swag, and raise awareness and money for the Wildland Firefighters.

The time caps below mark the time needed to “pass” the pack-test. We encourage you to take on the challenge you see fit. Not finished with distance within the allotted time frame? Keep going… you will get a medal for effort! 🙂

Here are your challenge options:

Arduous / Pack Test / 3-mile hike with 45-pound pack in 45 minutes
Moderate / Field Test / 2-mile hike with 25-pound pack in 30 min
Traditional / Walk or Run a 5K/ Your choice of location/ Take as long as you like

How to choose your test:

Arduous: involves field work calling for above-average endurance and superior conditioning. All firefighters are required to perform arduous duty. Firefighters, strike team leaders, line scouts, and others assigned arduous duty must be prepared to work in steep terrain; and in extreme temperatures, altitude, and smoke-while maintaining reserve work capacity to meet unforeseen emergencies.

Moderate: involves field work requiring complete control of physical faculties and may include considerable walking, standing and lifting 25-50 lbs. Safety officers and fire behavior analysts are examples of moderate duty positions.

Traditional: You will do what you can to support!

How to train:

For the Pack Test, begin by hiking a 3-mile flat course without a pack. When you can cover the course in less than 45 minutes, add a pack with about 25 pounds. Increase the weight until you can hike 3 miles in 45 minutes while carrying 45 pounds.

Holding the Line Virtual Race Swag

Wildland Firefighter Foundation’s main focus is to help families of firefighters killed in the line of duty and to assist injured firefighters and their families. We honor and acknowledge past, present, and future members of the wildland firefighting community, and partner with private and interagency organizations to bring recognition to wildland firefighters.

Wildland firefighters represent the diversity of the land they protect.  They are federal, state and local firefighters, private sector firefighters, interface firefighters, and volunteers from rural communities and towns across the United States.  Many are long-time career professionals, some much newer to the job. They’re ordinary people doing an extraordinary job, a community of committed individuals who work and train to protect our private and public lands.
