A Road Optional Event

“I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but gravel, or allroad, is kind of a triathlon thing. Just look at the front page of the Slowtwitch Forum right now. Maybe three threads on it, right now, on gravel, the bikes, the races. Gravel is really where road and tri meet. Multisport gravitates to it because we like tech – a lot – and we like moving from one endurance paradigm to another.” – Dan Empfield, USAT Hall of Famer

For this reason, we are excited to present to you the Ugly Dog Triathlon.

This is a “Road Optional” event, so naturally, your road choice is optional.  You like gravel?  Choose the “Ugly Dog” gravel option.  Don’t like to get dirty?  Choose the “Pretty Dog” pavement option.

Swimming is not your thing?  Do the du!  Prefer swim, bike, done?  Sign up for the aquabike!

All Ugly Dog events are draft-legal.  Click here to understand the differences between draft-legal and non-draft-legal triathlon.

Pretty Dog is NOT draft-legal. It follows standard USAT non-draft rules.

Interested in gravel but unsure of what kind of bike to ride? You can use almost any kind of bike — whether it’s a mountain, hybrid, cyclocross, gravel, or even a road bike. If you choose to ride a road bike, we recommend using a tire designed for gravel roads.

Stick around immediately after your race to hang out in the Ugly Dog Distillery Signature Summer Spritzer tent for a complimentary cocktail (participants 21 and up). The official post-party will be held at the Ugly Dog Distillery in downtown Chelsea.

Age group participants shall not wear wet suits in water temperatures equal to or greater than 84 degrees Fahrenheit. The wetsuit policy for elite athletes shall be determined by the USAT Athletes Advisory Council. The AAC has set the wetsuit maximum temperature for elite athletes at 68 degrees for swim distances less than 3000 meters and 71.6 degrees for distances of 3000 meters or greater. Any swimmer wearing a wetsuit with a thickness measured in any part greater than 5 millimeters shall be disqualified.

The Time-Trial Swim Start
We use a time-trial swim start. What does that mean? The swimmers line up on the beach and, at the race starter’s signal, enter the water individually at short intervals (usually three to five seconds). This is an alternative to the traditional wave start where a large group starts all at once.

Every member of the Epic Lifeguard Team has American Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguarding Certification in addition to basic American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification. This means that our guards have all taken and passed an additional course in which they received training in the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to emergencies in non-surf, open-water areas. Our superbly trained lifeguards are yet another reason our races are so Epic! Our lifeguards are also able to keep our swimmers safe thanks to our official SUP company, Red Star Board Company. We’re very grateful to have Red Star as part of Epic team.

This race is sanctioned by USA Triathlon (USAT) therefore all participants must have an annual membership or purchase a one-day membership. These options will be available during the registration process. The annual membership fee is $50 and the one-day fee is $15. To learn more about USAT visit https://www.teamusa.org/USA-Triathlon/.

Because our triathlons are sanctioned by USA Triathlon (USAT), we follow their wetsuit rules. Competitors may wear wetsuits if the water temperature is 78 degrees or lower. USAT rules also state that if the water temperature is between 78.1 – 83.9 degrees, competitors may wear wetsuits but will not be eligible for awards.
